“Amedeo Tommasini’s life is a reminder that the most powerful legacies are not measured in titles, but in impact. He united a community, he preserved a craft, and he helped give physical form to one of the most important documents in modern history. His story proves that an immigrant kid from North Beach can shape the world — and that’s the story we want every young person to feel under their feet when they walk this Honor Walk.”

-- Gina von Esmarch, President SFLIHW

Tommasini was born in Buenos Aires to an Italian family of printers and raised in San Francisco, where he became a track champion at Lowell High before helping found the club that would become the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club. In 1945, he was entrusted with designing and supervising the production of the original United Nations Charter, printed in five languages and signed at the War Memorial Opera House. His story now joins the Honor Walk as the fifth plaque installed along the historical route.

About the San Francisco Little Italy Honor Walk: Founded in 2023, the San Francisco Little Italy Honor Walk, Inc. (SFLIHW) celebrates, preserves, and enriches Italian-American heritage and culture in San Francisco's Little Italy in North Beach. Its mission is to honor the voices, struggles, and triumphs of those who shaped this vibrant community. The bronze plaques, situated on the sidewalks of North Beach, will form the San Francisco Little Italy Honor Walk, starting from the lively core of Washington Square, along Columbus Avenue and Broadway, and running along some adjacent streets. In addition to the physical plaques, honorees will have comprehensive profiles detailing their lives and contributions available on a free app developed by COM.IT.ES. SF. The app will provide text in both English and Italian.

All plaque unveilings will be open to the public, inviting community members to join in celebrating the remarkable legacies of these honorees.
