Celebrating Legacy, Community, and Cultural Leadership
Message From the President
The San Francisco Little Italy Honor Walk continues to build momentum as one of the city’s most visible cultural preservation initiatives, bringing together civic leaders, historians, organizations, and community advocates committed to honoring the legacy of Italian Americans in San Francisco. Over the past year, the organization has expanded community partnerships, elevated public engagement through plaque unveilings and events, and strengthened collaboration with Italian and Italian American institutions across the Bay Area. As the initiative continues to evolve, the Honor Walk remains focused on preserving history while creating a lasting cultural destination rooted in education, storytelling, and civic pride. I am proud to say that 2025 has been a defining year of growth for the SFLIHW.
Community Leaders Gathered to Honor Amedeo “Tommy” Tommasini
On November 20th, 2025, the Honor Walk community came together to celebrate the life and legacy of Amedeo “Tommy” Tommasini, whose impact on North Beach and San Francisco’s Italian American community spans generations, most notably through his role in founding the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club. The gathering welcomed civic leaders, historians, community organizations, friends, and family members who reflected on Tommasini’s enduring contributions and his commitment to preserving the spirit, culture, and identity of San Francisco’s Little Italy.
The event featured remarks from Gina von Esmarch, 2025 President of the San Francisco Little Italy Honor Walk; Consul General Massimo Carnelos of Italy in San Francisco; San Francisco Supervisor Danny Sauter; Assemblymember Catherine Stefani; Bill Waste, speaking on behalf of the Tommasini family; Manuele LaTorre of the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club Foundation; and Basil Russo, President of COPOMIAO. Laura Waste, Tommy’s niece, shared her recollections of her uncle. Together, the presenters reflected on Tommasini’s lasting influence on North Beach, San Francisco, and the broader Italian American community.
The gathering reinforced the importance of documenting the individuals and stories that have helped shape the city's cultural fabric. Through the Honor Walk initiative, these legacies become part of a living historical pathway that educates visitors, inspires future generations, and celebrates the enduring contributions of the Italian American community. The ceremony concluded with the official plaque unveiling, followed by a shared dinner, a particularly fitting venue given Tommasini's pivotal role in its founding and development.
Strategic Partnerships Continue to Strengthen the Mission
The Honor Walk extends its appreciation to Nibbi Brothers, with special thanks to Larry Nibbi for helping the organization get its start; and to the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco – Massimo Carnelos – and Deputy Consul Davide Corriero for their continued support of the organization’s mission and public visibility. Their engagement reflects the growing importance of the Honor Walk as a collaborative cultural initiative that connects civic leadership, heritage preservation, education, and community engagement.
The organization also recognizes the ongoing contributions of its core partner organizations and supporters, including Italian Community Services (ICS), iTAL Foundation, Italian Heritage Parade, Le Donne d’Italia, the Leonardo da Vinci Society, Museo Italo-Americano, the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club, and numerous community volunteers and advisors such as Lee Bruno/Historical and Tom Trombadore as Legal Advisor, whose dedication continues to advance the initiative.
Public Events and Honoree Recognition Drive Community Engagement
Recent unveilings and community events have continued to elevate awareness of the Honor Walk throughout San Francisco and beyond. Ceremonies honoring George Moscone, Dr. Mariana Bertola, A.P. Giannini, and Fr. Raffaele Piperni have drawn participation from civic leaders, nonprofit leaders, educators, historians, and community members, reinforcing the Honor Walk’s role as both a cultural preservation initiative lasting generations and creating an important civic destination.

Future initiatives will focus on expanding educational outreach, strengthening digital storytelling, growing strategic partnerships, and introducing additional honorees whose stories helped shape San Francisco’s cultural landscape. The organization remains committed to creating meaningful public experiences that connect history, heritage, and community while elevating North Beach as a destination that celebrates Italian American contributions to the city. Among those being considered for future recognition are Gaetano Merola, Antonella Pisanelli, Joseph Alioto, and Rena Bocci.
